Smile More

Intro

I have noticed that people don't really smile all that often. I don't mean joking or laughing, I mean smiling to themselves about anything. Life feels serious and rushed. One doesn't need a reason to smile, but sometimes smiling has a reason.

Today, the morning weather was quite peaceful. I smiled because of it. My smile wasn't directed towards anyone in particular - just whoever made that moment possible. People say to practice gratitude. It is quite easy to practice it if all it takes is a smile. If I didn't smile, the heaviness of life would have continued. But I did, and the heaviness lifted a little.

Why Don't We Smile?

People tend to associate smiling with talking to people or doing well in something. But life makes us forget that it is okay to be happy with the small things. Frankly, my life feels a little better now that I appreciate the small things, like the weather being good.

Smiling as Gratitude

Smiling can and is a quiet thank you. For example, when you help someone out. Maybe they were so overwhelmed that you helped them, that all they can manage to do is smile. Smiling is a great way to acknowledge the good in the world without having to overexplain or overthink it.

The Science Behind It

Smiling can also boost mood. A 2022 study published in Nature backs this up. Even smiling for the sake of it can often boost mood, even just a little. Our brain and body mimic each other. Our brain responds simply to the act of smiling, and it feels happy, which leads to more smiling.

Choosing to Smile

It is important to choose to smile. Don't try to force or fake it. As long as you are intentional about smiling, it will help. Smiling allows you to take a pause and recognize something good. Given the state of the world, maybe we should do that more often.

Outro

Smiling doesn't indicate life is perfect or nice. It just shows that you have noticed something beautiful. There are many beautiful moments in life. Smile more, even if no one sees it.
